THE CHALLENGE: FOOD SECURITY AND LIVING INCOMES FOR SMALLHOLDER FARMING FAMILIES More than 700 million people go to bed hungry every night (UN). That is about one in ten globally. Food insecurity is rising, especially in rural areas of developing countries where typically more than 70% of people live in poverty and farming is the main livelihood. These small-scale farming families often lack the right resources and knowledge. Also, they are battling climate change, facing higher temperatures, longer droughts, and unpredictable rainfall, which lead to loss of soil fertility, erosion, poor harvests and failing revenues. At the same time, the demand for nutritious food and agricultural products is rising due to the growing global population. Yet, many developing countries rely heavily on costly imports to meet this demand. THE SOLUTION: ENDING HUNGER AND POVERTY BEGINS WITH AGRICULTURE Heifer believes that people need opportunity, not charity. We believe in local solutions with a global impact. Also, growth in the agricultural sector is two to four times as effective at reducing poverty as in any other sector (WorldBank). This is why Heifer supports small-scale farmers – especially women farmers and youth – in developing countries. Our aim is to unlock their potential and contribute to vibrant, sustainable local economies and communities. With the right knowledge, resources, care for the environment, good cooperation and access to markets, farming families can improve their production, increase incomes and build resilience to climate change and contribute to a nutritious regional food supply.
